Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

I like making lists. In fact, I like making lists so much that I once had to go to therapy for it. For me, lists can be a form of self-harming but the thing that most of my doctors have failed to see, is that I have a very strong inclination towards accomplishing what's on them at any given time.

Let's review this list from July, 2009:

i. attain my very own chanel bag - check
ii. move to paris - check
iii. write a novel - not yet, but I am working at a magazine full time so that's gotta be something
iv. have a daughter - not yet, but I've been promised an approximate date to begin trying
v. love myself - turns out this is super hard and the way there makes it almost not worth it so, whatever
vi. stop reading books in the middle if they don't do nothing for me - check
vii. live until 100 - well, I'm 27 in like a week

At this moment in time, I really don't have anything I want to add on the list. That's because I have another list in the making:

i. drink two mugs of coffee with oat milk - check
ii. put the dishes in the sink - check
iii. put the delicates in the bathroom sink - well they're next to the door on the floor so that's gotta be something
iv. prepare everything for washing the floor - check
v. make the bed - check
vi. read at least 100 pages of the book you're reading
vii. try to leave the house
